Having identified this cellular protein, the researchers examined whether any drugs were already in existence that could block the function of the particular protein. There was one possible candidate drug called ouabain . The drug is marketed for the treatment of heart disease. It is a chemical found in the ripe seeds of African plants Strophanthus gratus and the bark of Acokanthera ouabaio.
